ABSALOM
Scripture Readings with personal comments, commentary links and other useful illustrations: 2 Samuel 14; 15; 16; 17; 18
Absalom, one of David's son. He killed Amnon for raping his sister Tamar, (2 Samuel 13,23-39). After the murder he fled from Jeruslem. Three years later, he returned to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 14) He started a conspiracy war against his father. Daivd had to flee Jerusalem (2 Samuel 15). He listened to the evil advice of Ahithophel to sleep with David's concubines. He listen to Ahitophel advice to attack David (2 Samuel 17) but changed his mind on hearing advice from Hushai. Absalom was fleeing in a loosing battle against David's generals when he was riding on his mule under the thick brances of a large oak and his hair got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair. Someone saw Absalom hanging by his hair in the tree, and he told Joab who killed him with three javelins (2 Samuel 18).

Application
Absalom, reaped what he sowed. He was not a godly man but rather went on his base nature and instincts. He killed Amnon for raping his sister Tamar, he slept with his father's concubines in the sight of Israel and he tried to cease power from his father! He met a death which was violent by Joab. We should learn from his life that our actions and words can and will affect those we love. Absalom was proud of his handsome looks! The irony was that he died by his hair got caught in the oak tree that lead to his death by Joab. He may have been sucessful in his wicked life but the consequence of his sins caught up with him.

ADAM

Scripture text: Genesis 2.4-5.32
Adam means 'red earth'. He was the first man created in the image of God. He was the husband of Eve in the Garden of Eden. When Eve was tempted and yield to the serpent Adam was nowhere to be found. The apostle Paul held Adam accontable for the sin not Eve. He had compared death through the first Adam (Romans 5.11-21) and life through Christ the second Adam.

ADONIJAH
More on Adonijah
Adonijah was the son of David and Haggith 2 Samuel 3:4; 1 Kings 1:5,6; 1 Chronicles 3:2
Adonijah tried to take over the throne from Solomon by having alliances with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest. Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei and David's special guard did not join the alliance to make Adonijah. Nathan told Bathsheba that Adonijah set himself as king of Israel. David was warned by Bathsheba, who kept his vow to have Solomon to be the next king of Israel. 1 Kings 1
When Adonijah heard that his brother Solomon became king of Israel, took hold of the horns of the altar. Solomon spared his life.
Adonijah requested that Bathseba asked Solomon for the hand of Abishag the Shunammite in marriage. Solomon denied the request and oredered Benaiah to execute Adonijah.
Executed by Solomon 1 Kings 2:13-25
What can we learn from Adonijah's life? His life is a warning to us not to seek position or persons in life that God has intended for someone else. He may have had the legitimate right to the throne, but it was God's plans and purpose for him not to be king of Israel or have Abishag as his wife.

BRAZEN SERPENT
Scripture Readings with personal comments, commentary links and other useful illustrations:
The Israelites complained and spoke against God and Moses. God sent them some venomous snake among them, and the snakes bit them and they died. The people came to Moses and said that the sinned because they spoke against the Lord and Moses. So Moses prayed to the Lord. The Lord told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole, anyone who looked at it would be saved. And when it did it anyone who looked at the bronze snake was saved from snakes bites. Jesus said in John 3.14-15 that as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert so the Son of Man was lifted that evryone who believes in him have eternal life. This was a part of the conversation with Nicodemus leading up to John 3.16.

EVE
Get a verse list by searching for 'Eve' with the Bible Gateway Search engine at the bottom of the page.
Scripture text: Genesis 2.4-5.32
This is the chapter in the Bible that described how sin came into the world by the fall of man. God told Adam who told Eve that they were not to eat from the tree of knopwledge of good and evil. That was the instruction, plain and simple. However the serpent, Satan came along and lied and muddied the facts as he deceived Eve. The question was where was Adam? Temptation would not be temptation unless it was alluring and that was what Satan did. This is the lie that many cults teach today that you could be God. Satan is the father of the New Age movement!
We also see the first Messianic promise that Jesus would defat Satan (at the cross). Eve and women after her would have birth pains, and sin would have its effect on the world.

Verses to meditate on: 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this,
"Cursed are you above all the livestock
and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring [a] and hers;
he will crush [b] your head,
and you will strike his heel." GIDEON

Judges 6 -Because the Israelites sinned, God gave them into the hand of the Midianites for seven years. The Israelites ended up living in caves, and the Midianites raided their farms. God called Gideon, an unlikely candidate to be a judge. Gideon pointed out that although God delivered them from Egypt, He has now abandoned them. His clan was the weakest in Manasseh and he was the weakest in his family. Gideon wanted a sign that it was Gid really speaking to him. The angel gives Gideon a sign by touching the rock on which the meat and unleavened bread was on. A fire coming out of the rock consuming the meat and the bread. Gideon tested God again this time with a fleece (6.36-40) twice. Should we put out 'fleece' to see if God's will should be done in a certain way? What do you think?
Judges 7 - God told Gideon that he had too many men for Him to deliver Midian into their hands. Those whou were fearful may leave. Twenty-two thousand men left while ten ten thousand remained. Finally only three hundred men were left to take on the army of Midian! How did Israel win the victory? They blew trumpets annd broke empty jars, and the enemy panicked! What can we learn here? God uses small things to accomplish His purpose. (1 Corinthians 1.26-29). Here he used three hundred men to take on the whole army of the Midianites. The Lord told Gideon 'In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her.' Judge 7.2
Gideon and His Son
Judges 8.1-3 People were critical and angry with Gideon since they were not included in the defeat of the Midianites. They wanted to share in the glory.
Judges 8.4-9 There were the officials of Succoth who were cynical of Gideon and did not want anything to do with Gideon or his men or had faith in God. Their attitude was unbelief: since they did not have Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian why should we help you? They paid for this attitude.
Gideon and his men finally captured Zebah and Zalmunna. there were the cowardly (10-21) killing two famous kings was difficult for Jether, Gideon eldest son to do. according to Wiersbe, Gideon had to deal with several types of people: the cowardly (v. 1-3); the cynical (4-9), the cowardly (10-21) and the compromising (v.22-35). It takes a good leader to deal with these type of characters. Unfortunately we find these types in the church. HUSHAI
Scripture Readings with personal comments, commentary links and other useful illustrations: 2 Samuel 15; 2 Samuel 16; 2 Samuel 17

David fled Jerusalem on account of Absalom, he met Hushai at the mount of Olives. Even when things look grim for David, Hushai was a friend and counselor of David who overthrew the counsels of Ahitophel. His counsel allowed David time to get fresh troops to fight Absalom and for David to have a new headquarters.

SAMSON
Scripture text: Judges 13-16
Samson was the strongest man in the Bible. His birth announcement was unusual because the Angel of God made the announcement of his birth and the fact that he would be a Nazirite.
He had weakness for women. God used this weakness for His glory in the defeat of the Philistines. He was married to a Philistine woman, slept with a prostitute from Gaza and had a love affair with Delilah who ended betraying him for money. He told Delilah the secret of his strength, that his head would be shaven.
His eyes were gouged out and he was used to mill grain. At his death, he stood between two pillars and pulled the pillars down and killed more Philistines during his death than when he was alive.
