Barnabas

Barnabas means son of encouragement. Barnabas, also surnamed Joseph, was from Cyprus, and owned a piece of property and sold it and gave the money to the apostles to take care of the needs of the church (Acts 4.36). Ananias and Sapphira had come forward under a false pretense of selling their property and was struck dead by the Holy Spirit.
When Paul became a Christian, nobody trusted him, because he had persecuted and ordered Christian killed. Barnabas took him under his wings (Acts 9.26-28) and encouraged him in the Lord duting his early days of being a Christian. The Holy Spirit consecrated Paul and Barnabas to go on the First Missionary Journey (Acts 13.4-14.28)
Barnabas had a dispute with Paul over John Mark (Mark who wrote the Gospel of Mark). Paul thought Mark was useless in the mission work. Barnabas took Mark with him and went on the Second Missionary Journey while Paul took Silas. Without Barnabas' encouragement, we would not have the Gospel of Mark or the Apostle Paul.

Application
Be an encourager in the Lord! You don't have to be well-known or in the limelight. Who knows what wonderful thing would happen to the person that you are encouraging.

Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist and the wife of Zechariah the priest. Mary visits Elizabeth (Luke 1.39-45). The baby in Elizabeth's womb leaped, when she heard Mary's greeting. She became filled with the Holy Spirit and said that she blessed among women, and blessed is the child that she beared which would be Jesus. As a mother, she brought up John the Baptist in the ways of the Lord.

He was the brother of James, son of Zebedee. The brothers were fishermen. They were disciples of John the Baptist before they met Jesus. Peter, James and John were the inner circles of the disciples. In Matthew 20.20 their mother requested that her sons would sit on either side of Jesus in His kingdom. Peter James and John , the inner circle was allowed to witness the resurrection of the synagogue's ruler's daughter (Mark 5.37-43). James and John were given the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder known as the sons of Thunder, because they wanted to rain fire from heaven to kill the people from a Samaritan village which did not welcome Jesus (Luke 9.53-56).

John the Baptist

Scripture text: Today's Readings with personal comments, commentary links and other useful illustrations: Matthew 3; Mark 1.11-22; Luke 3; John 1.1-28
John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus Christ. He was the son of Zechariah the prophet and Elizabeth. He was the forerunner of Jesus and spoke of the kingdom of heaven which was at hand. He came in the spirit of Elijah, fearless and full of the Holy Spirit. He baptized Jesus in the River Jordan. He had disciples, among them were James and John who became disciples of Jesus. John lived a very austere life, dressed in garemtn of camel hair, and eating wild locust and honey. He was fearless and spoke against Herod Antipas for marrying his brother's wife. He was executed because Salome, Herodias daughter had pleased Herod Antipas by dancing. He had promised her anything in the kingdom. She had asked for the head of John the Baptist.
Jesus said in Matthew 11.11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Memorable quote: 'He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of shose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'

More on Mary
There are six Mary in the Bible. This one is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary was betrothed of Joseph. The birth of Jesus known as the incarnation was a miracle. Mary was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and His birth was the fulfillment of Isaiah 7.14.
Jesus honored his mother and told John to take of her when he was on the cross. Mary was an ordinary person, she is not to be revered, she is NOT the mother of God. The doctrine of Mary in the Catholic church is NOT biblical. She was just an ordinary human being who obeyed and put her faith in God like Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Mary was not a perpetual virgin. She should not be worshipped nor exalted as in the Catholic church.

More on Mary Magdalene
There are six Marys in the Bible. This one is Mary Magdalene. She was demon possessed and Jesus drove out demons out of her. She was the first person whom Jesus saw when He rose from the resurrection. Contrary to myths and misconceptions (even before the Da Vinci Code!), she was never married to Jesus nor was she a prostitute. She, Mary, mother of Jesus and Salome was involved in the burial of Jesus. Mary had told the disciples that the Lord was risen.
According to the Holman Bible Dictionary: "A tradition, especially prevalent in western Christianity from about A.D. 500 onward, identified Mary Magdalene with the sinful woman of Luke 7:36-50. The text gives no reason for such an association, as the introduction of Mary in Luke 8:1 is quite removed topically from Luke 7:36. To confuse the interpretative tradition further, the sinful woman in the anointing scene of Luke 7:36-50 is often identified incorrectly with another Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazrus. On all accounts, no evidence exists that the sinful woman of Luke 7:1 should be identified as Mary."

Philip the Evangelist

Personal comments, illustration, commentary links:
Name means lover of horses
He was of the seven deacons chosen in Acts 6.He was also called Philip the evangelist (21:8, 9). During the persecution that resulted from the stoning of Stphen, he had fled the area and went first to Samaria, where he labored as an evangelist with much success (8:5-13). There he met the Ethiopian eunuch, explained the passage from Isaiah 53 and witnessed to this man, as a result he became converted and was baptized. We can learn from Philip to take every opportunity to witness the Good News to all.
