MATTHEW 4
Today's Readings Matthew 4 Matthew 4 with Commentaries, verse by verse
The temptation of Jesus Matthew 4.1-11; Mark 1.12-13; Luke 4.1-13
The way Jesus resisted temptaion was by answering the devil with the word of God. Jesus had memorized Scripture amd knew Scripture. What an object lesson for us! When we look at Eve in Genesis 3, she had God'Word specific instruction but she did not hide the word in her heart and hold on to it. Think of it this way, you are in the rough seas of lif and all you have to hold to is a rock found above the surface of the sea. All you can do was to hold on to it with all your strength.

MATTHEW 5
Today's Readings Matthew 5 Matthew 5 with Commentaries, verse by verse Matthew 5 with Commentaries, verse by verse
Jesus spoke about the Beatitudes (Matthew 5.4-12; Luke 6.20-23) Note the types of people that we need to be and if we achieve to be that type of person, then we will be blessed (the Greek word, makarios) which means blessed and is NOT happiness which cannot be affected by outward circumstance. This is similar to joy. The Beatitudes have been misinterpreted and abused by many for their own gain. We must bear in minf that God's way are not our way! For eample the beatitude, blessed are the poor in spirit does not mean God will bless all the poor peoples of the world rather it means that we must realize that we are poor in our spiritual lives and we are bankrupt spiritually and must run to God for mercy.
We are to be SALT and LIGHT v. 13-16. Jesus's teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is IMPOSSIBLE for any of us to do on our own. We need supernatural power to achieve what he taught.
He said that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets. This is true, that all the prophecies and types are fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
The Ten Commandments are based on the actions done against God and man when a sin is commited. Jesus took this one step further he looked at the intent or the motive which when fully developed lead into sin. For example when he spoke about being angry with your brother, Jesus is looking at the intent. The anger which is conceived will lead finally to murder! See James 1.13-15
Matthew 5.27-48
Topics covered include adultery, divorce, oaths, an eye for eye and love for enemies. Jesus expects his disciple not to live according to the letter of the Law bu in the spirit of the Law. He expects us to live on a higher plain than expected for religious people. For example, adultery viewed by many was commited when the physical act was commited but when he look behind the intent of the heart and said that when a man looks at a woman and have lust in his heart, he commits adultery, then wa all ARE guilty, even though we have not have physical contact with the woman. Ladies, this also apply to you as well. Even President Jimmy Carter said that he was guilty of adultery: PLAYBOY INTERVIEW: In an interview published in the November 1976 issue of Playboy magazine, then-Governor Carter talked about the role of religion in his life. In one part he said:
" I try not to commit a deliberate sin. I recognize that I'm going to do it anyhow, because I'm human and I'm tempted. And Christ set some almost impossible standards for us. Christ said, 'I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery.'
"I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do--and I have done it--and God forgives me for it."
When we try to live to follow the Ten Commandments we find that we cannot follow them, much so can we follow the Sermon of the Mount. Surely we are spiritually bankruot (poor in spirit) and should run to the mecy of God and depend on His Holy Spirit to enable us to live the Christian life. IVP Commentary on Matthew 5

We are told by Jesus not to worry about anything whether it is what we eat, drink,or wear. We just have to look around! God takes care of the birds and the animals, flowers abd planrs in nature, how much more, He will take care of us. MATTHEW 7
Today's Readings Matthew 7 Matthew 7 with Commentaries, verse by verse Matthew 7 Matthew 7.3-5; Luke 6.41-42 Jesus speak about judging others
Many used these verses out of context. We should have spiritual discretion and judge for ourselves whether a person is a Christian by the fruit they produce in their lives with respect to a group or local church. We need to protect other Christians from people who claimed to be Christians but are out to destroy the lives of the Christians. Jesus meant that we should not go around with an attitude of judgment, condemning others.

MATTHEW 8
Today's readings from Matthew 8 Matthew 8 with Commentaries, verse by verse Matthew 8 in KJV
In Matthew 8.2-4; Mark 1.40-44; Luke 5.12-14, Jesus healed the man with leprosy. Jesus touched the man which was considered to be against the Law. Jesus had shown compassion to the man who by societal standards was untouchable. What about us? Do we care for the untouchables of society like the person with HIV-AIDS, the poor and the homeless like Jesus would.
In Matthew 8.5-13; Luke 7.1-10, Jesus healed the servant of a centurion. He was amazed by the faith of the centurion. The centurion was a man of authority and when he gave a a command it was carried out. He recognized that Jesus had the authority to heal and he had expected no less from Jesus to carrry out his authority.
In Matthew 8.14-16; Mark 1.29-34; Luke 4.38-41; Jesus heals many people.

MATTHEW 10
Today's Readings Matthew 10.21-42 Matthew 10 with Commentaries, verse by verse Matthew 10
Jesus sends out the Twelve. Matthew 10.2-4; Mark 3.16-19; Luke 6.14-16; Acts 1.3; Matthew 10.9-15; Mark 6,8-11; Luke 9.3-5; 10.4-12; Matthew 10.19-22; Mark 13.11-13; Luke 21.12-17; Matthew 10.26-33; Luke 12.2-9; Matthew 10:34-35; Luke 12:51-53
Jesus spoke about opposition the disciples would face if they followed Him from their own families. He warned about persecution. He said that a student is not above jis master, nor a servant above his master. This is a warninig to us to count the cost on following Jesus. We are to acknowkledge Him before men for He will acknowledge us before the Father. Jesus said something astonishing: 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.'

MATTHEW 16
Reading from Matthew 16 Matthew 16
The demand for a sign Matthew 16.1-12; Mark 8.11-21
Even today we look for sign, we don't go by faith and obedience in seeking God.
The yeasr of the Pharisees and Sadducees was their hypocritical teachings (v. 5-12). Let us be careful not to be hypocritical in the way how we teach others how to live the Christian Life by saying and not living the Life.
Peter's confession of Christ Matthew 16.13-16; Mark 8.27-29; Luke 9.18-20
In the Matthew passage, by the Holy Spirit, Peter saw and understood who Jesus was. Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Chosen One, the Messiah. That question still applies to us today. "Who do you say that I am?". We can never understand who Jesus Christ is unless the Holy Spirit reveals Him to us.
Jesus predicts His death Matthew 16.21-28; Mark 8.31-9.1; Luke 9.22-27
Jesus is the prophet, he forthtell (proclaims the rruth) and foretell about the future. he spoke of his death. How would you feel in this situation. Peter reacted in a human manner and did not understand what was going on! Yet in that confusion God is in control! IVP Commentary on Matthew David Guzik on Matthew 16

MATTHEW 24
The Jesus Page
Today's Reading Matt 24
You want to know Jesus said about the second coming? this is the chapter! Who would know more about the Second Coming than Jesus would.
Jesus taught on the mount of Olives (Matthew 24-25; Mark 13.1-23; Luke 21.5-24)
His disciples asked Him two questions. What would happen to the temple and what would be the signs of His coming.
He used tha analogy that His second coming would be like the labor pains assoicated with delivery of a baby.
The signs are many deceivers would claim to be Christ and mislead many. (v. 5)
Wars and rumors of wars! (v. 6-7)
Earthquakes and famines (v. 7)
These are only the beginning of birth pains (labor)
There is more: there will be persectution and martydom V. 9
Many will fall away and betray each other v. 10 the church will become apostate.
many false prophets
lawlessness will increase v. 12
people's love for Christ will grow cold v. 12
the Gospel will be preached to the whole world, then the end will come...
The temple will be rebuilt (Third temple) on the Temple Mount because you have to have a Temple for the ABOMINATION OF THE DESOLATION to occur.
When the ABOMINATION OF THE DESOLATION occurs, Christians must flee! This is the beginning of the great tribulation. It will be so horrific. there will be many false Christ appearing.
Matt 24.29-51
Jesus talks about his return Matthew 24.26-35; Mark 13.24-31; Luke 21.25-33
When will He will return? It will be after the great tribulation. The sun will be darkened amd the mon will not give its light, and the power of the heavens will be shaken. He will return will power and glory. We should learn from the parable of the fig tree. The generation who lived through the tribulation and see the signs of the sun, moon and heavens will know.
Jesus warned the disciples to remain watchful (Matthew 24.36-51, Mark 13.32-37, Luke 21.34-38)
He gave the analagoy of the days of Noah, people going about their daily lives, the owner of the house being alert for a thief in the middle of the night. Be watchful, be vigilant, keep and eye on the signs of His coming.
Application
He is coming back! Are you prepared to have Him return. He will return whether you like it or not. Are you watching for the signs with anticipation.
