ACTS 1
Today's Readings: Acts 1
The book of Acts is the history of the early church. The main character is the Holy Spirit. The other characters are Peter and Paul with the other apostles. An introduction to the Book of Acts Malik: An outline of the Book of Acts; An Introduction To The Book Of Acts by Malik
Acts 1 deals with the Ascension of Jesus. the glorified Christ gave them last minute instructions that STILL applied to us today. We would be empowered with the Holy Spirit to help us to live the Christian live and for us to witness for Him. The verse to meditate on (Acts 1.8): But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.'
The word martyr in English is the word for witness in the Greek! Are we willing to be witnesses for Jesus even to the point of being faithful to martyrdom? We are to be witnesses at home (in Jerusalem), in our community (in all Judea) and Samaria (to people on 'the wrong side of the tracks, people we don't want to associate with) and to the world (ends of the earth). We are more willing to go to the ends of the earth rather than be at home and be a faithful witness or not deal with people we do not associate this. We talk about missions but we forget the first part of the verse: Receive the Holy Spirit! It is the Spirit who enables us to be witnesses for Jesus.
Judas is replaced by Matthias so that there were twelve Apostles.

ACTS 2
Today's Readings: Acts 2
Acts 2.1-21
The Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost (v. 1-13)
The main character is the Holy Spirit! Let us not fool ourselves, if God the Holy Spirit is not in a church, the church is dead!Acts 2 deals with the day ofPebntecost when the Holy Spirit came as the gift of Jesus and the early church was born. We see lives that were transformed.
Peter addresses the crowd (v. 14-41) Peter and the other disciples were transformed in their attitude and they were bold in preaching the Gospel. Christ gave them last minute instructions that STILL applied to us today. On that day some three thousand people gave themselves to the Lord. Peter spoke and 'each one heard them speaking in his own language (verse 6).
Verse to meditate on: Acts 2.21: And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
 Acts 2.22-42
Peter addresses the crowd (v. 14-41) Peter and the other disciples were transformed in their attitude and they were bold in preaching the Gospel. Christ gave them last minute instructions that STILL applied to us today. On that day some three thousand people gave themselves to the Lord. Peter spoke and 'each one heard them speaking in his own language (verse 6). On that day many people heard the Gospel message as far away as Rome, Asia, Media and Crete. Peter message was focused only on one subject, his eye-witness of Jesus Christ. He spoke to his audience. He knew his audience and related to them the history of how the Messiah was proclaimed in Scripture. These were pilgrims from not only from Jerusalem but everywhere in the Roman empire.
Verses to meditate on Acts 2.38-39: 38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."
Please note two gifts are now given to those who believe: the forgiveness of sins and and the indwelling gift of the Spirit (Romans 8.9-11; 1 Corinthians 12.13)
Three thousand were added on that day.

Today's Readings: Acts 3
Peter heals the crippled beggar. In verse 6, he told him "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."
Peter spoke to the onlookers (v.11-26) What is the best can we offer a world that is in need? It is Jesus Christ, the one who can save the world. The onlookers who heard of the miracles heard Peter's sermon. Peter seized the moment and shared the Gospel with them.
Verse to meditate on: Acts 3.29: 19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

ACTS 4
Today's Readings: Acts 4
Acts 4.1-22
The apostles were empowered by the Holy Spirit when they spoke to the people. The priests and the captain of the guard and the Saducees were greatly perturbed because they were proclaiming that Jesus rose from the dead. They put Peter and the apostles in jail. The number of men in the church grew from three thousand to five thousand. The next day they were brought before the Jews and were asked by 'what power or what name did they do this?' They were bold and spoke in the power of the Spirit. They had power which was not from this world but from heaven.
Verse to meditate on: Acts 4.12: 12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
Acts 4.23-37
Peter and the apostles, when they were released did the most important thing: they PRAYED. They reminded themselves WHO GOD IS in prayer. They prayed for boldness and for miraculous signs and wonders to be performed in Jesus' name. What would you have done when threatened by the authorities not to preach the word. Right now, there are many of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have to make this decision wheteher to speak boldly and face persecution or to be silent and nor suffer persecution. What would you have prayed?
The believers shared their possessiojns among each other. This is a radical idea for Christians here in America where we are concerned about our material possessions.
Verse to meditate on: 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."

ACTS 5
Today's Readings: Acts 5.1-21
v. 1-11
Important lesson to be learnt from the life and death of Ananias and Sapphira: DO NOT MESS WITH GOD!! Do not test the Spirit of God.

Figure: Acts 5.5 Life of Peter
The apostles heal many, (v. 12-16)it was an outpouring of God's Spirit in Jerusalem at that time and as a reslut many became healed and the word of God spread like wildfire.
Acts 5.22-42
The apostles were persecuted imprisoned, released by an angel of the Lord. The next day, the Jewish leaders threatened them. Verse to meditate on: Acts 5.29 - Peter and the other apostles replied 'We must obey God rather than men!

Today's Readings: Acts 6
The apostles realized that because of the explosion in church growth, they could not do it all by themselves so they appointed seven men who helped in the ministry of the distribution of food to the widows. The church began having problems between the Hebraic ands the Greek Jews. Churches have problems because we are all humn beings with fallen nature, it is HOW we solve the problem!!!
They appointed the seven deacons to help them out among them was Stephen. They did not appoint out of favoritism or church politics instead they look at the spiritual qualification of the men who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. Remember Solomon asked for wisdom. We should learn from the life of Stephen.
Do you realize that when we obey God rather than men, be willing to spread the Gospel message, it will spread! However to be a witness, as the Greek word martyus implies martydom! Are you prepared to do that for the Lord Jesus?

ACTS 7
Today's Readings: Acts 7
Acts 7.1-21
Stephen gave a speech to the Sanhedrin, starting from Abraham, the covenant he made with God. He tehn talked about Joseph and his jealous brothers, and how God used Joseph to save his people. He reminded them how God was faithful in keeping his promises. We need to be reminded countless times how God has been faithful to us in keeping His promises. We are a people who forget very easily what God has done for us.

Acts 7.22-43
Stephen continued in the speech giving a full acount of Moses from adulthood, how he, as a prince of Egypt saw the Egyptians mistreating the Hebrews sided with them. He further went on and talked about Moses encounter with God and the burning bush, he was sent to be ruler and judge over the Hebrews. Moses received the Ten Commandments but the people were disobedient to God and he turned them over to the worship of heavenly bodies.
Verse to meditate on:37"This is that Moses who told the Israelites, 'God will send you a prophet like me from your own people.'[h] 38He was in the assembly in the desert, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to us.
Acts 7.44-60
Stephen was the first Christian martyr of the Christian church. He asked God to forgive the people who stoned him to death. Paul was standing there holding the cloaks of those who stoned Stephen. The word Stephen in Greek means crown. Stephen earned the crown of life.

Today's Readings: Acts 8
Acts 8.1-25
Here we see the church EXPANDING through persecution. Why? Because when they were persecuted they fled away from Jerusalem and went to other parts of the Roman Empire, preaching the Word. They were dependent on the Lord and the Lord rewarded them. One of the beatitudes was 'Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.' (NASB)
The Christians were perhaps happy being in Jerusalem and Judea and would have stayed there had the Lord not give a nudge using a little persecution for them to head to Samaria of all places. Apparently they forgot about Acts 1.8! Sometimes we are so happy been in our little Jerusalem, we do not want to go out and reach our neighbors (especially people we do not like).
Remember, the Jews wanted nothing to do with the Samaritans. The Apostles probably did not want anything to do with the Samaritans either. Philip, however went to Samaria to preach the Gospel and the people listened. Miracles were performed. In verse 9 we meet Simon, a sorcerer. Simon had attracted a lot of people because of his sorcery. We can even learn from someone as evil as Simon the sorcerer. In verse 13, Simon, himself believed and was baptized. Simon's god was money and power and when he saw the miracles that Peter and John had performed, he offered them money. Peter was quick to rebuke him and notice Simon was quick to accept that rebuke, he asked them to pray for him. Simon learnt how to take the rebuke because it was for his own good. Philp is someone we should emulate. he seized the opportunity to witness to the Ethiopian eunuch and met the person where he was at. The Ethiopian was reading a passage from Isaiah 53. He wanted to know who Isaiah was talking about. This Ethiopian was a devout man, he came to Jerusalem to worship! Philip related to him and met his needs. The Ethiopian ended up believing in Jesus Christ and was baptized. he was an influential man in the courts of the Ethiopian queen Candance, and was probably one of the founders of the Ethiopian church,

Today's Readings: Acts 9
We can learn from the conversion of Saul (Paul). When the wicked persecute Christians and the Church, they are persecuting Jesus Christ. We can take comfort in that Jesus knows how to take care of His own!

Repentance is 180 degree turn in our behavior. Paul used to destroy the church now he spends his life building the church. Saul was into persecuting the church, he himself was persecuted that he had to escape in a basket over the walls of Damascus.
Ananias was obedient to the Lord even though he was afraid of Saul. Jesus told Ananias that Paul would be His instrument to carry His name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. Jesus would show him how much he must suffer for His name (v. 15).
Acts 9.26-43
Paul's life was radically changed (2Corinthians 5.7), however when he tried to join the disciples they did not believe he was a Christian! Barnabas befriended Paul and brought him to the apostles. Barnabas is an encouraginf person and his name means 'Son of Encouragement' Paul kept on speaking for Jesus instead of against Him.
Verse to meditate on: Acts 9.31: Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord. Let us remember it is the Holy Spirit who builds up the Church, not a pastor, elder, deacon or some other human being.
Peter's life was also radically changed and empowered by the Holy Spirit! He healed a paralytic named Aeneas and raised Dorcas from the dead. Note Peter was now bold and a leader. He was humbled and a servant. Why, because the Spirit of God was living in Him.

Today's Readings: Acts 10 BIBLE BY CHAPTER
Acts 10.1-23
The disciples had Jesus' command from Acts 1.8 to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judeea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Here we see a Roman centurion, Cornelius, a man of God, a Gentile but a member of the Roman miiltary who was hated by the Jews had a vision from an angel to call for Peter!
Peter also had a vision while waiting for his meal. He saw something like a sheet filled with many animals, and birds. Then he heard a voice telling him to kill and eat and he protested. This happened three times. Peter, being a devout Jew observed which aniomals were acceptable and clean to be eaten as required by Leviticus 11. The voice also told him not to call anything impure that God has made clean. The Spirit told hem that three men wanted to see him. These men were from Cornelius, he invited them in as his guests. Verse to meditate on: Acts 10.15: The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."
God calls all types of people from different races and bcakground into the Kingdom, we should rejoice and commit ourselves to be faithful workers and pray that the Lord would remove any prejudices or preconceived notions that we have about the peoples that we are trying to reach.

Acts 10.24-48
Peter went to Cornelius' house. Cornelius told him how he was praying and saw an angel who told him how to find Peter. Peter realized at that point that God showed no favoritism but reaches all men whether Jews or gentiles. He then gave a description on the eyewitness account of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit came on these gentiles as well to the astonishement of the circumcised believers. Let us not forget that God reaches out to ALL people regardless of race, socioeconimic background, circumstance. Salvation is available to ALL people IF they put their trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Likewise the Holy Spirit is available to ALL believers when Jesus becomes the Lord and Savior of our lives.
Verse to meditate on : 34Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.

Today's Reading Acts 11
Acts 11.1-30
In Acts 11.1-18, Peter explain to the apostles and the church in Judea that the Gentiles received the word of God. Some of the circumcised believers critized Peter for having for eating with uncircumcised men. Peter had to explain why he and six other disciples went to Cornelius' house. Verse to meditate on: 16Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with[a]water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?" Peter was obedient to Acts 1.8! The Gospel and the Holy Spirit was available to ALL men and women. Because he was obedient to the Word, we are directly affected by that act of obeidence some 2000 years later.
In Acts 11.19-30, the disciples were becoming very influential for the Lord and in Antioch, the disciples were called Christians. If we were arrested for being Christians would the evidence against us find us guilty? Would we be light and salt, that we could be found guilty as Christians.
Application
I love Barnabas, he befriended Pau; and took him under his wings! We need to be like Barnabas to encourage other Christians to walk in the Lord.
Antioch was the center of missionary activity in the New Testament Church.

Herod put to death James, the brother of John. He was the first apostle to be martyed The Greek word martus signifies a witness who testifies to a fact of which he has knowledge from personal observation. This is how we got the word martyr! James was a faithful eye-witness of the Lord. Peter was imprisoned by Herod, but he had a miraculous escape from prison. We need to understand that when our time is come to meet the Lord, then it will happen! It happened for James but not for Peter!
Do you believe in angels? They are God's messengers and angels to minister to us. An angel minister to Elijah when he fled from Jezebel and an angel freed Peter from prison

This was the beginning of the Missionary Journeys. This is the First Missionary Journey (Acts 13.4 - 14.28). Let us notice that Paul and Barnabas were set apart to do the work.
Application
This was God's desire not man's desire. It was the Holy Spirit who determined the work. Let us not everything done was according to the will of the Spirit.
Paul's First Missionary Journey

They went to Cyprus (v. 4-12) and to Pisidian Antioch. (v. 13-52). In Cyrus they met opposition from a Jewish sorcerer, Elymas and a false prophet, Bar-Jesus. The pro-consul, Sergus Paulus wanted to hear the word of God but Paul and Barnabas met opposition from Elymas and Bar-Jesus. Paul rebuked Elymas and he beame blind.
Paul always took the opportunity to speak at the local synagogue. This was no exception in Psidian Antioch.
Acts 13.16-41
This is the First Missionary Journey (acts 13.4 - 14.28). Let us notice that Paul and Barnabas were set apart to do the work.
In Pisidian Antioch. (v. 13-52), Paul took the opportunity to speak at the local synagogue. He started off speaking about how God had acted in the Old Testament and how the Messiah came through the people of Israel. He identified the Messiah as Jesus. The Messiah came to the Jews but they did not recognize Him, condemned Him and put Him to death, God raised Him from the dead. He pointed out how the Old Testament prophecies were fulfilled through Him.
Verse to meditate on: 38"Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.
This is the First Missionary Journey (Acts 13.4 - 14.28). Let us notice that Paul and Barnabas were set apart to do the work.
Paul and Barnabas presented the Gospel to the Jews in a local synagogue. This had the Jews thinking about the Gospel. Some were receptive, others were resisting the Gospel. The next Sabbath, the whole city was out to hear Paul. The unbelieving Jews became jealous and cause Paul and Barnabas trouble. Paul then turn to the Gentiles and preached the word and the Gentiles were receptive. Word of application: The Gospel will divide people into either being responsive or resistive towards it. Then we should go to the ones who are receptive to the Gospel.

Paul had to appear before Festus. Paul declared his innocence and right as a Roman citizen (v. 1-12). Paul now had to appear before Agrippa. This was in fulfilment of Jesus that he would appear before kings (Acts 9.15).
Application If there was a charge against you for being a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, would you be found guilty? Paul was been sent to Rome? For what purpose? We will see in the biography of Paul

Today's Reading Acts 28
Paul was shipwrecked on Malta, when he was there, he was bitten by a snake but unharmed. This created a stir among the people. God allowed him to healed several people and was treated well (v. 1-10). They were on Malta for three months. When they arrived in Rome, they were greeted by believers (v. 11-16). In Rome, Paul was under house arrest, when he preached to whoever visited him, including the Roman guard who was chained to him.

Application What would you do if you were in Paul's situation? Could you imagine beng chained to a guard 24 hours a day!! Paul made the most of his time and did not despair. During this time he wrote the Prison Epistles: Philippians, Colossians, Ephesians and Philemon.
Verse to meditate on: 31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him. (KJV)

God judges sin (v. 1-16)
The Jews and the law (v.17-25)
Application No matter how religious we are, and how devout we are SINNERS and need God's grace into our lives. We can learn from the Jewish people, that they have the truth revealed to them, they still did not believe.
Verse to meditate on: 12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Today's Reading Romans 3
God is faithful regardless of man's unrighteousness (v. 1-8). No one is righteous nor seek God (v. 9-20); Righteousness through faith (v. 21-31).
Application
None of us seeks God, rather it is God who seeks us. (Psalm 17 and 51). When we realize how sinful we really are then that will drive us to the mercy of God! We can only be righteous through FAITH, not by the church we attend, nor the religious heritage and tradition we grow up with. We cannot be rigteous through good works.
Verse to meditate on:
10As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one;
11there is no one who understands,
no one who seeks God.
22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Today's Reading Romans 4
Paul used the life of Abraham to argue that we are justified by faith. He also spoke aout the life of David.
Application When we are justified, that is, declared righteous before God, we need to be reminded it is by faith. This faith is given to us by God. This is GRACE, using the acrostic 'God's Riches at Christ's Expenses'! Nothing we can do can make us righteous before God. Jesus is the only one who is righteous and he gave Himself as penalty for our sins, hence we are declared righteous!!
Verse to meditate on: 23The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone, 24but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. ROMANS 5

Today's Reading Romans 5
Romans 5 spoke of one aspect of salvation: justification!! We have peace and joy in Jesus Christ because we have reconciliation in Jesus Christ(v. 1-11). Sin came into the world through one man, and because of sin, death. Righteousness come to the world through the Second Adam, that is Jesus Christ
Application We have PEACE with God. The world is trying to find peace with God but they have no idea where to find it. They have created religion to make 'peace' with God. Alas, it is only found by having faith in Jesus Christ and the work that he has done on the cross!
Verse to meditate on: 1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a]have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

Today's Reading Romans 6
Salvation is not only justification being free from the penalty of sin, but also being free from the power of sin, sanctification! This chapter deals with the Christian being dead to sin but alive in Christ (v. 1-14). We are slaves to whom we serve and Paul encourages us to be slaves to righteousness (v. 15-23)
Application We are dead to sin! We were crucified with Christ, so that our sinful nature was crucified with Him, so when He rose from the dead, He lived to God, so do we!
Verse to meditate on: 6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Paul gave an illustration from marriage: When the husband dies, the wife is released from that marriage. (v. 1-6)
Paul spoke experience of struggling with sin. The things, he wanted to do, he did not do, nor the things that he did not want to do he did! Can we get released from this struggle with sin?
Application
In the same way we are dead to requirements of the law through the body of Christ. This does not mean that we should not be antinomians, that is lawless. With freedom, there is responsibility.
Yes, we can be released through the power of Jesus Christ!
Verse to meditate on: 24Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin?[c] 25Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God's law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
